10 Books To Read Before They Hit The Cinemas This 2014


If you loved the movie version of The Fault In Our Stars, there's plenty of reasons why you need to read on. 

Hollywood still gets movie fodder from books, and these book-turned-film adaptations are sometimes what we look forward to the most. There are lots of beloved books that will be getting the big-screen treatment this 2014 — like Mockingjay, Gone Girl, The Giver — these are just three great stories that we know you're excited to see! But sometimes you just can’t tell how good the film version will be if you haven't read the book first. The movie trailer would usually feature a great cast and musical score, and the familiar literary title but for you to know more about the movies and to get you started with the cinema-inspired reading list, check out this list of the movies based on books that are coming out this year.

1. If I Stay by Gayle Forman


Who's starring: Chloë Grace Moretz
When's it going to be released: September 3, 2014
What's it about: It's a heartachingly beautiful story about a 17-year-old girl who slips in a coma after a bad accident. She then, finds herself watching her own damaged body taken from the wreck, her friends and family visiting her in the hospital. Later on she'll have to choose whether to live a difficult life or die peacefully. If you read before the movie comes out, you’ll know what she decides and you can stress less at the theater.

2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn


Who's starring: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike
When's it going to be released: October 2, 2014
What's it about: It's about the intriguing story of the mysterious disappearance of Amy on her fifth wedding anniversary and her husband Nick is suspected of murdering her. But of course, there's still plenty left to our imagination when it comes to the plot twist.

3. Maze Runner by James Dashner

Who's starring: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario
When's it going to be released: September 18, 2014
What's it about: This is a first in a young adult trilogy, it's a sci-fi book that follows the story of a bunch of boys trapped in a fantasy world called the Glaze. It's basically a maze filled with deadly monsters and other dangers ready to kill them. They must solve the mystery of the maze in order for them to escape.

4. Mocking Jay by Suzanne Collins

What's it about: It's the third and final book of the Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss takes stock of her new position as a rebel in District 13 and then she'll fight to finish against the corrupt Capitol.

5. The Giver by Lois Lowry


Who's starring: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Swift
What's it about: This classic tale is about a 12-year-old boy named Jonas who gets the task of being the new "receiver of memory," who keeps society's past memories, but meeting the previous receiver — "the giver" — makes him conflicted.

6. Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Who's starring: Reese Witherspoon
What's it about: Cheryl Strayed details her physical and emotional journey as she takes a 1,100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail in order to deal the loss of her mother and her marriage all in a short amount of time. The book is filled with suspense and humor and the movie features ReeseWitherspoon. Expect a lot of her charm and impeccable acting skills.

7. Serena by Ron Rash

What's it about: The book is a thrilling story that follows newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton as they move from Boston to North Carolina in 1929 to start a timber business. The pair is ruthless in building their timber empire, and when Serena finds out that she can't have children, she sets out to kill George's illegitimate son.

8. This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper

What's it about: Judd Foxman’s father just died, and on top of that, his wife Jen had an affair with his boss, which recently became painfully public. Judd is forced to sit Shiva and spend seven days and nights with the dysfunctional Foxman clan who aren't used to observing their Jewish faith are forced to fulfill their father's final wish and sit shivah together for an entire week and confront their problems.

9. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Who's starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks
What's it about: This thriller book also from the author of Gone Girl tells the story of Libby Day, whose mother and sisters were murdered at the family's farmhouse when she was only 7. She testified that the person responsible for the cruel acts was in fact her 15-year-old brother, Ben. 25 years later, Libby decides to meet with the Kill Club, a group of crime enthusiasts who investigate the case and force her to rethink what really happened.

Chloë herself shared a first look for "Dark Places" through her Instagram. In the still from the flick, Chloe is joined by her co-stars Tye Sheridan and Shannon Kook.

10. The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks


Who's starring: Michelle Monaghan, Ian Nelson, James Marsden 
What's it about: It's another Nicholas Sparks book-turned-film. Get excited for all the kilig moments in the book and film as it is about the story of high school sweethearts Dawson and Amanda as reunite years later, when they both return to their hometown.
