Robin Williams' work touched many lives. Looking back at the life and career of the actor/comedian, it will be hard to forget his energy.

Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday at his home in Northern California, Marin County Sheriff's Office said. He was 63.

At 11:55 a.m., police were called to Williams' home where he was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m. According to the Marin County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division "suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia." A comprehensive investigation has yet to be made.

His publicist said the actor had been battling depression of late.“This is a tragic and sudden loss,” his publicist Mara Buxbaum said in a statement. “The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

His wife, Susan Schneider, also released a statement saying: "This morning I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings," she said in the statement. "On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

US President Barack Obama offered condolences to his family and said: "Williams arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit."

"He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalised on our own streets."

Whether he was hilariously dressed in drag to play an elderly nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire or inspiring students (and viewers) in Dead Poets Society, Williams' was magic on and off the big screen. We can only thank this man, this legend, for his prolificness, for sharing so many of those smiles. Though the original may be gone forever, the memories of that infectious grin will live on forever.
