The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs) upped the ante this year, bringing the awards show to an international level with Asian and International artists gracing the show yesterday at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
In the tradition of K-Pop, the show delivered performances with high-caliber production value. One of the more memorable performances was "Moonlight Sonata," a combination of K-Pop and Classical music, performed by Lang lang and Hyunah. The dance that followed featured Jang Hyun Seung of Beast and Hyunah, which ended in a passionate kiss.
Japanese singer Koda Kumi, winner of the Hottest Asian Artist Award, performed a soulful number ("Ai No Uta" which roughly translates to the music of love), followed by provocative and energetic numbers (VIP and Bling Bling Bling) which she is known for.
Another highlight of the show was the back-to-back number by Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas! Will.i.am performed "The Hardest Ever" bringing electro-pop music on stage in full futuristic get-up. Apl.de.ap meanwhile took a raw approach singing "We Can Be Anything," the theme for his advocacy in providing quality education to Filipinos, joined by kids carrying yellow balloons on stage. Idols were on their feet singing along with Apl.de.ap, including Dara of 2NE1. Both BEP members were joined by CL of 2NE1 to wrap up the performance with BEP's hit song "Where is the love?" Incidentally, Will.i.am revealed during the red carpet that he just finished working on a project with 2NE1. The group will be heading to New York next month to perform, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for what they have in store.
Equally noteworthy was the joint performance of big-time producer and rapper Dr. Dre with hip-hop music icon Snoop Dogg. To the delight of those in attendance, hit songs "Drop It Like It's Hot" and "The Next Episode" were performed.
Finally, Super Junior's performance, one of the most anticipated of the night, did not disappoint ELFs. Songs they performed include "Superman," "Mr. Simple," and "Sorry, Sorry." The group, which won 3 awards at 2011 MAMA (Album of the Year, Male Group and Singapore's Choice) were emotional when they accepted the award for Album of the Year, thanking their ELFs and the "people at home" for bringing them to their current status.
Other notable performances include Girls' Generation who performed their hit song "The Boys" which has been doing well on MYX charts. 2NE1 performed "Lonely" and the song which got them the Song of the Year Award at 2011 MAMA, "I Am the Best."
More than the Asian awards dished out and the international artists who performed at 2011 MAMA, the biggest proof that K-Pop has been elevated into the international scene has been the support from people all over the world. As Bae Soo Bin mentioned in his spiel, a lot of international fans voted during the online voting process for 2011 MAMA. Slowly and surely, K-Pop has certainly made a mark in the global music industry.
In the Philippines, 2011 MAMA-related subjects became trending topics on Twitter, including Simon D, Baek Jiyoung, Super Junior, Song of the Year, and MAMA 2011.
If you missed the livestreaming event yesterday, don't fret, MYX will be airing the replay on December 9 (Friday) at 7PM (PhilippineTime).
