Chan-Poon Tandem Triggers Christmas Nostalgia

The Songwriter (right) and the Crooner performing "Beautiful Girl"

Whenever I see girls and boys selling lanterns on the street, I remember Jose Mari Chan singing about them.

Jose Mari Chan has become synonymous with Christmas. Come the -ber months and his voice starts popping up on radios, malls, and random people unconsciously humming strains from "Christmas in Our Hearts" or "A Perfect Christmas." It wouldn't be a stretch to say that holidays are not complete without a dash and dollop of good 'ol Jose Mari Chan harmonies to trigger Christmas nostalgia.

True to form, families flocked to the PICC Plenary Hall last Friday to witness the collaboration of two musicians with a flair for the classics and standards, and to feel the tingles of Yuletide cheer, in "The Songwriter and the Crooner." The generations encompassing the fan base of both artists brought together a diverse group of people into the plenary hall as Richard Poon's aptitude in molding standards to his distinct sound, grounded in jazz, provided a contemporary spin to the music, while Jose Mari Chan's masterful songwriting brought back some of his beloved classics.

Highlights of the night included the guest appearance of Pokwang during Richard Poon's set. The lady in red drew laughs from the crowd with her quick wit and in-your-face humor. She even got to sing her current single, "No Boyfriend, No Problem."

The Songwriter, Jose Mari Chan, also had a special guest whom he described as an "angel with a harp."

Jose Mari Chan performed two songs with harpist Noelle Cassandra, including hit song "First Romance."

For his part, Jose Mari Chan sang fan favorites "Refrain," "Can We Just Stop And Talk a While," "Tell Me Your Name," among others. During one of the gaps, Jose Mari Chan quipped about his delight that the hall was filled despite the competition from other artists staging shows that same night. He was in good spirits as he entertained the crowd with jokes, even sharing some laughs with friends in the audience. The MYX Magna awardee also announced that he'll be releasing a a brand new Christmas album next year!

Of course, the night would not be complete without the customary Christmas carols and duets. Richard Poon sang "Jingle Bells" early on. Duets included a Chinese-English version of "Beautiful Girl," "Beautiful Country," to name a few. Closing the show was their collaborative rendition of, what else, "Christmas in Our Hearts," and "A Perfect Christmas" -- a fitting way to end the night.
