Singer-songwriter Rey Valera does not subscribe to the modernist concept of "art for art's sake."
In an interview with Bro. Jun Banaag on radio dzMM on Friday (March 2), Valera revealed that he's sharpening his pen once more to write new material targeted towards the youth, abs-cbnNews.com
The motivation came from friends and colleagues who have been urging him to write new songs to add to his repertoire of OPM Classics, including "Mr. DJ," "Maging Sino Ka Man," "Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako" and "Pangako Sa'Yo."
"Ngayon, inuumpisahan ko na ulit mag-flex ng muscles eh, songwriting muscles, mga creative juices, kung paano ko siya aatakihin (writing new music), anong mga klaseng [kanta] for this kind of generation," he said.
For music to serve a purpose, Valera says a careful study needs to be done in order to connect with his audience, which, he says, does not equate to selling out.
No, I just want to connect, gusto ko siyang... tina-target kong audience 'yung Pilipino eh.
To connect, songs must be understandable, otherwise it serves no real purpose.
