Let's spice up your Friday the 13th guys! Filipino post-punk rock band The Black Vomits is launching their self-titled vinyl record of all-original songs with an operetta called The Gray Ground which will be staged on May 20 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight in Circuit Makati.
The Black Vomits is composed of Joyen Santos (vocals), Bryan Escueta (guitars), Julius Sanvictores (drums), and Igan D’Bayan (bass).
Written by D’Bayan, The Gray Ground features actors from De La Salle College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts, DJ Mia Ayesa, and performers from Ballet Philippines. The work focuses on a writer named Jan who, as D’Bayan describes, “wakes up every day and wonders whether he will get the inspiration to write his first literary work, and be like Pynchon or The Bard… but he gets sucked into the vortex of dead-end jobs.” Interwoven with his story is the music to be performed live by The Black Vomits.
The Gray Ground is The Black Vomits' love letter to the rock opera and the concept album, inspired by classic rock and roll artists. “It’s an attempt to approximate vinyl records you put on, trip to, and get euphoric by. We wanted it to be glorious, loud, cosmological, epic, Kafkaesque, Floydian, anachronistic and risky,” the band said. It is completely self-funded and independent.
