The impossible was possible last night! The Smashing Pumpkins rocked in front of their Pinoy fans who braved the torrential rains and floods! Billy Corgan, with new recruits Jeff Schroeder, Nicole Fiorentino and Mike Byrne finally ended the 20-year wait for Filipino fans. The concert was originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 7 but the band and concert organizers decided to postpone it for a day because of the really bad weather.
The wet and wild crowd was treated to almost three hours worth of the Pumpkins' hits. The band played the full thirteen tracks of their latest album "Oceania" for the first part of the concert. Adding visual stimulation was the huge ball of a backdrop with video mapping by artist Sean Evans. The band then payed tribute to David Bowie with their rendition of the song "Space Oddity". They proceeded with a slew of their more popular hits like "Disarm", "Tonight, Tonight", "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and ending their main set with "Today".
For an encore the band played six more classics! After singing "Cherub Rock", Billy Corgan expressed his gratitude saying: "On a normal night, that would be the end of the show. But this is not a normal night! We want to play a few songs for you that we haven't been playing to honor those of you who made the effort to get here tonight... the Lord has blessed me with a good life and some of the greatest fans in the world... So let's get this party started!"And then all hell broke loose as the drum loop pattern of "1979" was heard and the whole Big Dome sang along with Billy. The Pumpkins concluded the night with a cover of "Black Diamond" by Kiss, with drummer Mike Byrne on vocals! Without a doubt, yesterday was the greatest day that Pinoy Smashing Pumpkins fans will ever know!
