Adele's Grammy-winning album "21" was named 2012's Top Album as it topped album sales in the U.S., beating Taylor Swift's "Red", according to Nielsen SoundScan.
According to the organization, this is the first time that a single album had been a top seller for two consecutive years since Nielsen began tracking album sales in 1991.
"21" sold 4.41 million copies in the U.S. in 2012, while Swift's "Red" sold 3.11 copies. In 2011, "21" sold 5.82 units.
Keith Caulfield, Billboard's Associate Director of charts told Reuters
, "It's a sort of a once-in-a-lifetime album, Only a few of these albums come along in history." The record reached the 10 million albums-sold plateau in a span of two years, he noted, and the last album to achieve that was N Sync's No Strings Attached in 2000.
"21", which is considered as a heartbreak record that includes hit singles like "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You," gave Adele six Grammy's in early 2012.
