Eraserheads is one of the most iconic bands in Philippine music history. Their songs are those which cannot be easily forgotten and those which listeners can easily distinguish as an Eraserheads song.
Formed back in the 90's, the band was composed of Buddy Zabala, Marcus Adoro, Raimund Marasigan and Ely Buendia. Their hit songs include "Ang Huling El Bimbo," "Ligaya," "Toyang," and "Magasin," to name a few.
In 2002, they disbanded and went on their own as they ventured into their own music individually or with a new band.
Guitarist Marcus Adoro recently had an interview with Saeed Saeed of The National
where he talked about the past, present and future of one of most successful and influential bands in OPM history.
Marcus shared that Eraserheads were that typical story of a college band making it big. According to him, there was a big underground rock scene in the 90's that was just waiting to burst. "When we broke into the mainstream, the floodgates of the underground rock scene kicked open and everything just followed through," said Marcus when asked about how the success of Eraserheads opened the doors for many Filipino rockers.
The guitarist also added that when they were starting out as a band, what the people saw was who they exactly were. "We had nothing; no money to buy our clothes, let alone buy our own instruments... It was a take it or leave it kind of thing."
Marcus opened up about the cause of the band's breakup in 2002, saying that the members of the band ended up seeing different places. "We travelled and had kids and the themes of our music matured. The fan base couldn't keep up with us because they were still young and because of the success, we felt like we were growing up extra fast," he said. Marcus added that the split "in a way, it was an exhaustion."
As a member of an OPM icon band, what can Marcus say about the current Filipino rock scene?
He said that there is a lot of good talent coming out of the Philippines. "Right now the rock scene is so saturated. There are a lot of edgy bands but it's tough for them to receive focus... In time, the good bands will come out eventually," said Marcus.
The question that everyone would love to ask right now: Will there be a new record from Eraserheads in the near future?
According to Marcus, "We did record some songs, which could be good material to release in the future. But I can't really say. It is too early at this stage."
Fans will definitely be more than happy to hear a possible reunion record from Eraserheads in the near future!
