Sugarfree fans have waited long for "Sa Wakas", a Pinoy rock musical featuring the band's music, to hit the stage. And as the curtains opened on April 13, it brought back wonderful and bitter memories through the stories of characters Topper, Gabbie and Lexi.
Photographer Topper tries to pick up the pieces of his relationships with two women, doctor Lexi and magazine editor/artist Gabbie û trying to make sense of how the love began, how it worked and didn't, and how to start anew. Telling the story through the well-loved Sugarfree hits like, "Hari Ng Sablay", "Burnout", "Wag Ka Nang Umiyak", "Mariposa", and "Telepono", just to name a few, made the musical even more relatable because the fans knew the songs by heart. But the storytelling have made it more interesting, surprising everyone on how the songs were used for specific moments and parts of the show.

Trying not to spoil you the major details, it's interesting how the musical is named "Sa Wakas". Aside from aptly basing the title from Sugarfree's first album, it's also means "finally" û finding one's self, making sense of what should be done next, and understanding the realities of falling in love and being in a relationship. And after watching the show, it may also be translated to "in the end." Why? Better catch the musical to find out!
It is a fresh approach to how we appreciate OPM, giving it a new twist and breathing life to the real stories behind the songs. Whether you are a Sugarfree fan or not, there is a bit of Topper, Lexi and Gabbie in each and everyone. The story can happen to anyone. People may relate to the bitter and painful moments of breaking up or bring back memories of being in love. Aspirational too for the hopeless romantics! Add in the brilliant singing of the cast, the harmonies, and unique musical arrangement, it's impossible not to be captured by this modern Pinoy theater experience.
