Meet Michael Young

Fitzgerald, Armstrong, Getz û these jazz legends are catching the younger setsÆ ears with the help of saxophonist, Michael Young.
Michael has been gathering initiates into the world of standards music over the last two years by playing at ManilaÆs hippest nightspots. But before you think that Michael is just another old soul trying to make legendary music approachable to a new generation, think again. HeÆll be the first to resist any genre pigeonholing. ôJazz is a big influence on me, but Kanye West and Bjork are as equally inspiring to me as Miles Davis.ö
Call it eclectic or tag it as fusion, Michael constantly looks for new possibilities of using the saxophone beyond the world of jazz standards. Apart form sharing the stage with Lynn Sherman, he has also performed world music with Cynthia Alexander, lent his sound to Nyco Maca for a latin-slash-electronic collaboration, and showed purists what heÆs capable of at the age of eighteen when he made his classical debut at Carnegie Hall.
Michael breaks into the local music scene after several years of teaching music in the United States and in the Philippines at UP Diliman and UST. With a doctorate in Saxophone Performance from the University of Southern California (USC), Michael is more than ready to step out of the classroom into a class of his own as one of ManilaÆs musicians to watch.
