The King of Pinoy Rap, Francis M. (44), succumbed after 8 months of battling with leukemia March 6, 2009, 12:27pm at Medical City, Mandaluyong. He was rushed to the ICU at 3am, Friday for severe sepsis, or inflammation of the body due to blood poisoning. But he didnÆt make it after his 4th chemotherapy session last January and a scheduled stem cell transplant after it.
Francis Magalona started as a break dancer earlier in the day but eventually ventured into acting because of his roots as the son of actors Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. After starring in numerous roles as a rapper/comedian/actor, his infectious single ôMga Kababayanö from his album ôYo!ö launched not only the mainstream hip-hop music in the Philippines, but also his status as the ôKing of Rapö.
His fruitful career these past years has earned him more and more titles to his name. Francis M. was a former radio jock, video jock, and host. His last hosting job was with a popular noontime show. He has produced albums of budding Filipino rap artists and has helped revive the Filipino Hip-Hop industry in the past years. Also a seasoned photographer, he has earned recognition from different publications and the Camera Club of the Philippines. Sponge ColaÆs ôKLSPö video was also the work of Francis M as a music video director and has earned him a MYX Music Award for Best Rock Video in 2006. And encouraging Filipino pride, he established FMCC (Francis M. Clothing Company) that sells garments thatÆs branded with 3 Stars and a Sun. But his songwriting prowess was the main thing that made him Francis M. With his hits ôTayoÆy Mga Pinoyö, ôKaleidoscope Worldö, and his collaborations with Ely Buendia for the Eraserheads Tribute, ôSuperproxyö, Parokya ni Edgar and Gloc 9 for ôBagsakanö, and tons more with other artists.
August 2008, he was diagnosed with leukemia and asked for privacy about his illness. All he wanted were prayers and support through on-going blood donations at Medical City. Friends from the industry has held fund raising events to support Francis M., including the album heÆs producing with friend, Ely Buendia called ôThe Sickos Projectö. He was supposed to perform with the Eraserheads on March 7 for the ôThe Final Setö and sing ôSuperproxyö but sadly, a day before the history-making concert, he has joined his Maker.
Francis M. is not only a loss to the Filipino music industry but also a loss to his family, wife Pia, and eight children, Unna, Nicolo, Francis Jr, Maxine, Saab, Elmo, Arkin, and Clara.
