17-year-old Michael Christian Martinez is the first Filipino to represent not just the country, but South East Asia in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Martinez started skating in 2005, training both in Manila and California and has won multiple ice skating medals in both local and international competitions, even setting ice skating records for the Philippines.
It wasn't an easy journey for Martinez as he conquered asthma during his early years. It was at a shopping mall ice skating rink where he turned his hobby into a sport.
"Masayang-masaya dahil nakatatak na sa Pilipinas na to show the world that Filipinos are really great and we could do good,"
he said in an article posted by abs-cbnnews.com
The men's figure skating competition is scheduled this Friday, February 14.
Good luck, Michael Christian Martinez!
